On the Chassis Dynamometer/exhaust roller dynamometer test bench our vehicles have to take different emission tests e.g. according to standards 80/1268/EWG for fuel consumption and 70/220/EWG for vehicle emissions, to optimize the engines pertaining to their emission behavior.
The test benches are certified, so that homologation testing for the assignation of the General Certification for vehicles (ABE) can be accomplished.
On the Chassis Dynamometer a driver retraces specified emission cycles. At the driving curves (Fahrkurven) acceleration, deceleration and shifting processes (including the allowed speed tolerances) are exactly defined.
For the measurement vehicle emissions are mixed with ambient air in the dilution tunnel to avoid condensation. Afterwards a sample is drawn from the diluted exhaust gases, collected in a bag and analyzed after testing. During the test, emissions are analyzed in modal mode every second and the results have to be stored.
A second assay is aspirated via filter to measure particles gravimetrically.
Parallel to it, raw exhaust gas can be measured prior to the catalyst and afterwards.
Following components are determined:
| NOx | Nitrogen-Oxygen-Compound |
| CO | Carbon Monoxide |
| HC | unburned hydrocarbons |
| CO2 | for calculation of fuel mileage |
| PM | Particles |
